Blue Slide Road

Northcoast Misc. WI13-1320

In Humboldt County, there are a several alternate scenic routes, or just scenic routes, such as Mattole Road, Bald Hills Road, and Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway. One road no one ever hears about is Belleview Road, in south Humboldt County. Fair enough, it’s not as scenic as these other roads, but it’s much shorter, and, moreover, can work almost like a scenic byway connecting Rio Dell to Ferndale. It’s easiest to connect to it at Rio Dell. You take the Wildwood Avenue exit and go south for about a tenth of a mile. Then turn right on Belleview Avenue:

In a little more than a mile Belleview Avenue turns into Blue Slide Road. This road along a bluff above the Eel River for about four and a half miles, whereupon it descends to a flatter region, where the road turns into Grizzly Bluff Road. Don’t worry, no grizzlies have ever been spotted on this road, nor has anyone ever been eaten by a bear. The whole section of the road looks like this:

The only real problem with the road is there are very few places to the park, so if you want to stop and get photos, you’re going to be out of luck more often than not. But there a couple of places where you can pull off and grab some vista shots. Below, a sampling from the road:

Parts of the road have washed away, forcing one way traffic, as per below:
