Snow in Redwoods 1
22 02 11 22:26
When you see redwoods in snow, what you are probably seeing is the cousin tree of coastal redwoods, the giant Sequoia, draped in a wintery mantle. Pictures of coastal redwoods in snow are rarer, because it doesn’t snow very often along the California northcoast, and when it does, many of the roads to the prime groves are closed. Type in “snow in redwoods” (with quotes) in google and you get nothing. Pictures of coastal redwoods draped in snow are a kind of holy grail for those of us who try to photograph these massive, heaven reaching trees. Read More...
Exploring the Northcoast 2: Dry Lagoon
21 02 11 21:42
About seven miles north of Patrick’s Point, nestled between Big Lagoon and Stone Lagoon is the so-called Dry Lagoon, entitled such because in the summer, it is largely dry. In the winter, during the rainy season, a shallow lagoon tends to form among the reeds and grasses on the other side of a wide, surf battered beach. A modest parking area is connected to Highway 101 by a narrow paved road. Read More...
Exploring the Northcoast 1: Patrick's Point
29 01 11 21:16
The northcoast of California, stretching north of San Francisco to the Oregon border, is a land rich in beauty, with towering, fog enveloped redwood forests and windswept beaches laced with towering rock formations and picturesque bluffs. The most spectacular, and least known, section of the northcoast runs from Shelter Cove in the south to Crescent City in the north. One of the most stunning locations along the northcoast is Patrick’s Point State Park, a few odd miles north of Trinidad. It’s a particularly rocky stretch, with boulders, cliffs, seastacks reaching out into the sea. Below is the western mid-section of the park. The large rock formation reaching toward the sea on the right in Patrick’s point; the large rock below and to the left of it is Wedding Rock. Trails can take you to the top of the rocks, where you can look down at the crashing waves far below. Read More...
