Superstition Mountains 1: Peralta Canyon

Peralta Trail WI15-9

The Superstition Mountains are east of Phoenix and Mesa, and north of Gold Canyon, in central Arizona. Trails are popular in these mountains, due to their close proximity to a major population area.

One of the most popular hikes in the Superstition Mountains is the Peralta trail, which runs through Peralta Canyon into the center of the Superstitions. The trailhead is reached by driving Peralta Road all the way to the end. You can reach Peralta Road by taking the Superstition Freeway (Route 60) east from Apache Junction until you reach Peralta Road. Turn left on Peralta Road and drive to the end. The road begins as a paved street, but once passed an elementary school, it turns to a fairly well kept dirt road. 7.5 miles from Route 60 you reach the trailhead. Here is what the road looks like on Google Maps:

While I did drive to the end of the road or hike the Peralta trail, I did go as far as Carney Springs Road, which seemed an attractive place to photograph in the morning, due to a south east facing ridge. The morning was cloudless and the sun was harsh, so I took only a few pictures. But these few will provide a glimpse of the scenery a mile or so from the Peralta Trailhead:
